“nigh-nigh” for Charlotte Rose

Here’s the top of a baby quilt I started YEARS ago. And, wonder of wonders, I still like it.  In the last two weeks, Charlotte has become infatuated with blankets, which she adorably calls “nigh-nigh.” So, my heartstrings are twanging to make her a drag-about “nigh-nigh.” And thanks to this running start, I just might get it done before she can say “blanket.”

It’s a simple quilt-top made of squares, two of which are much larger. Pieced blocks, with assorted background fabrics, are randomly sprinkled throughout.  I like how this gives the effect of a more involved quilt, without the time investment. The plan is to appliqué some baby chicks in the two larger squares, but I haven’t sketched the little chickies yet, so they just might evolve into ducks or pigs — we’ll see.  There, I’m officially a Work-in-Progress-Friday groupie (Hop Skip Jump blog, 2006)!

  1. that looks so sweet. I love those words that they use when they are little, my nearly 2 year old is just starting to say words properly and I’m pining for those cute little baby words. Sigh..

  2. My 21/2 year old says na na. I just finished making her a quilt here for our southern hemisphere winter and it is so nice to snuggle down with her. make sure you finish before the urge goes!

  3. What a beautiful little quilt. The color scheme is just right. I have made a few quilts over the years for my family. All different and unique. Since I seem to be the one who sews in the family, everyone loves them. I find great satisfaction and peace in quilts. Thank you for sharing your projects with us.

  4. Beautiful! As soon as I finish moving, I’ll be starting on one for my daughter who is due in November! (done in an odd sort of twist on a chinese coin quilt, I think)
BTW, I just received my contributor’s copy of “artful paper dolls” and I noticed your MIL was also one of the contributors. I loved her “old woman in purple” pantin! How wonderful that your family is filled with artists! I feel very lucky that my dh and my mom are both artists.

  5. Love the quilt. I made my first quilt a couple of years ago. It is a memory quilt made from my daughter’s baby clothes. It was a great way to preserve them considering how worn and loved (and stained!) they were. Got the idea from Martha– Martha’s minions more likely.

  6. Hi Heather! I just stumbled upon your weblog… I have recently discovered your fabrics and looked you up to get more information. Your designs are so awesome, I love them, and have bought five or six chunks of fabric as well as some others which coordinate, and am going to take a stab at making a quilt for my guestroom with it. I just made a simple striped quilt for my daughter, BEFORE I found your fabrics. D’oh! Grrrr!
In any case, I am amazed at the similarities in our creative makeup – I also try just about anything artistic, many of the same things you have listed, and some others. I’m currently selling some paintings/illustrations on eBay, making quilts on the side, embellishing my 4 year old daughter’s clothing, and doing some woodworking! (And don’t ask about MY drawers full of crap…uh…unfinished projects and materials… It’s a disaster! I don’t even have a studio, I have a half a closet and an old vintage bread box with mobile supplies for drawing/painting! We only live in 1200 sq feet… Anyway, wanted to just say hello and I’ll bookmark your web log.
    Thanks!
