Mysteries, Mysteries

A little WIP for today – mystery project in different sizes with mystery dog-tag thingy in the bottom photo.

I’m also having fun unravelling the mysteries of the internet. I don’t know anything about HTML and programming, but I’m getting such a kick out of figuring it out. Well, I haven’t figured it ALL out, but little bits and pieces. For instance — the link over on my sidebar that says, “Subscribe to this blog’s feed” — it’s boring. I checked out the source code for it and compared it with the source code for the Bloglines button at the bottom (because it has a graphic). With some fiddling and a quick image for my new “button,” I was able to make this:

Click it — it works! (Note from future Heather: It USED to work back in 2006 when blogs were followed closely on RSS feeds. Haha.) I know that I’m way behind many of you — you know who you are — with the fancy site-design and custom buttons. But, for a  girl who still doesn’t know what-the-html she’s looking at… hey, my button rocks! And, of course, now I want to re-vamp my whole sidebar — someday.

  1. well, we’re in the same computer boat. i’m just sorta kinda starting to figure out some things except i don’t know how to make a cute little image into a button like you did. i can make an already made button appear in my side bar though. :o) so good for you for figuring it out!

  2. I love a good mystery! I think I’ll have to sleep on this one – but thanks for the imagination inspiration! And “what the html” – loved it!

  3. Honestly, I think comparing your html with the code of a page you like is one of the best ways to learn! Nice button.
And, yes, “what the html” is hilarious !:)

  4. Sweet button you’ve created. Yeah, this code language is bugging me too. I just learned how to put buttons in my sidebar, now I’m worried that they look like blog graffiti or bumper sticker central.

  5. Well you are way in front of me. I had to ask a favorite blogger to make a button for me for the thrift challenge. It then takes me 10 minutes to intall the button. Luckily the writing part of the blog and uploading photos is simple. I love the button. It’s lovely, simple and sweet.

  6. Thank you for the tip on updating the bloglines radio button. I wasn’t certain of the capabilities with my basic typepad account but gave it a try. A little photoshop, flickr and placement on my blog and voila.

  7. Hi Heather, I love the photos on your site! You are SO talented!! I hope your brother is doing great and I just wanted to compliment you on your html! I followed the link to your fabric line, Fresh Cut, at Free Spirit, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Can you make a post about that to help us find your fabric? I’d love to get some when it comes out this fall!

  8. I have been studying that photo and have NO CLUE as to what you are up to. I do love that I am not the only blogger out there who doesn’t know a lick of html. Maybe there is hope for me yet!

  9. You’re way ahead of me in figuring out all the ins and outs of making a blog fancy and understanding the mysteries of html. And your blog is gorgeous weather or not your RSS button is borning or not.

  10. I can’t explain how much I ADORE your site! It’s such eye candy and I swear, you could take a pic of a pile of trash and make it look lovely. Fabulous!

  11. congratulations on your html success! i’ve been reading your blog for a while, because i fell in love with your beautiful and inspiring creations. now i see, that you are a multi-talanted person! 🙂
i learned html by myself. and i still remember that feeling of joy, when i first managed to do something just the way i imagined it before. so i kind of understand you. keep on! you’re great! :))

  12. Okay so are we guessing what you are making there?? I will go with slices of something…melon, oranges, lemons. That’s what they look like to me. Fortunately I have my computer nerd hubby to make all my buttons and such, but I sure wish I could do it myself. Looks really nice!

  13. I love your button! My blog is new and so I’m doing the exact same things to add to my blog. My figuring out is not nearly as advanced as yours – I think my next project is adding a banner.
